United Community Bank, a retail and commercial bank and one of the largest full-service financial institutions in the Southeast, today announced plans to locate its corporate headquarters in Greenville County, S.C. and expand operations in the area to support its overall growth strategy. The $24.8 million investment will create 227 new jobs in the Palmetto State. By establishing Greenville as its corporate headquarters, United Community Bank will become the largest bank headquartered in South Carolina.

Founded in 1950 in Blairsville, Ga., United Community Bank has over $18 billion in assets and 160 branches across Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, including 34 branches in the Palmetto State. In 2012, the bank began building its executive presence in Greenville County and now has three office locations in downtown Greenville apart from its branch network, and nearly 290 employees.

United Community Bank’s new downtown facility, to be located at 200 East Camperdown Way near Falls Park and the Reedy River, will serve as the bank’s corporate headquarters. It will also house a retail branch.

“We are pleased to establish a permanent, long-term presence in Greenville as part of our growth strategy,” stated United Community Bank Inc. Chairman and CEO Lynn Harton.  “As we expand across the Southeast, we continually evaluate the right solutions for the future of our company and see this investment as a significant step toward preserving the special culture we’ve built over the last 70 years. We remain committed to all communities across our footprint and look forward to being a contributor to business growth across the entire region.”

United specializes in personalized banking services for individuals and businesses throughout its geographic footprint, which now includes Florida under the Seaside Bank and Trust brand. Services include a full range of consumer and commercial banking products such as specialized lending, mortgage, advisory services, treasury management and wealth management. Respected national research firms consistently recognize United for outstanding customer service, including J.D. Power, which has awarded United the highest customer satisfaction score in the Southeast for six out of the last seven years.

“It is a testament to the overall excellence of our state when a company decides to establish their headquarters in South Carolina. We welcome United Community Bank to their new home and celebrate the 227 jobs they are bringing to the Greenville community,” said South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster.

United attributes much of its success to its unique, service-oriented culture that cultivates strong relationships between employees and customers. The bank has also developed and executed a strategy based on investment in its strong local markets and continued expansion in the Southeast’s dynamic growth markets. Its business model includes empowering local market leadership that has an average of 20 years of banking experience, most of which has been in their local markets.

“With United Community Bank expanding in Greenville County and selecting the location to be the company’s new corporate headquarters, we celebrate another big win for the state and local community,” added Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt.  “We look forward to watching their continued growth in our community for years to come.”

“Since 2012, United Community Bank has demonstrated a strong commitment to Greenville County and our state by steadily expanding its services and operations here,” noted Greenville County Council Chairman and Greenville Area Development Corporation Board Member Willis Meadows.  “County Council has worked diligently to ensure a favorable business climate which enables quality companies like United to thrive here. This expansion and establishment of United’s new headquarters in Greenville confirms that our economic development strategies continue to pay dividends.”

Today, United has 2,419 employees across its footprint who are committed to maintaining the bank’s extraordinary culture and creating meaningful relationships with customers, all with a goal of improving lives and communities.  The bank has been honored for the third consecutive year by American Banker and Best Companies Group as one of the 2020 Best Banks to Work For, and Forbes magazine named United to its “America’s Best Banks” list in 2020.

“At our core, we have the heart of a community bank, but we also have the talent, products and services of a larger institution,” added Mr. Harton. “It is our mission to help improve the financial health of our customers and ultimately our communities, and we look forward to continuing to live out our mission for many years to come.”

“United Community Bank has been an excellent, long-term partner to the city of Greenville. United’s expanded commitment and decision to make Greenville its headquarters affirms the work we’ve done to retain and attract strong corporate citizens,” said City of Greenville Mayor Knox White.  “With our mission to support financial services, entrepreneurship and advanced manufacturing, Greenville is establishing itself as a destination for innovation and a first-class workforce.”

United’s new headquarters is expected to be completed by 2024. Individuals interested in joining the United Community Bank team should visit the company’s careers webpage.
