Michelin North America
Michelin Group is active on all continents, from China to Brazil and from The United States of America to Germany and Russia. Michelin manufactures and sells tires for all kinds of vehicles, publishes maps and guides and operates a number of digital services in more than 170 countries.
Michelin is the leading tire manufacturer in the world. In 2003, Europe represented 52% of sales, North America 35% and Asia, South America and the Middle-East/Africa Zone 13%.
From invention of the radial tire to Pax System, and from the first gastronomic guide to the steel wheel, Michelin has played an active role at every stage of the automotive adventure. Michelin began manufacturing in Greenville in 1976 and moved the headquarters to Greenville in 1994.
Michelin is the exclusive tire supplier for the U.S. Space Shuttle Program. Each shuttle lands safely on six “Michelin Air” tires, four main gear tires and two nose tires. The newly developed “Michelin Air” tires have already been delivered to NASA for use in their ongoing testing. Development for the new tire was based in Greenville, S.C. at Michelin Aircraft Tire Corporation headquarters.
The Michelin Group and The Dow Chemical Company have signed an agreement for Dow to supply Michelin with a polyurethane-based inner support wheel that will enable an automobile with a flat tire to travel up to 125 miles at 55 miles-per-hour. This run-flat support wheel will be featured in Michelin’s PAX system, an innovative, integrated tire/wheel system. Because of its run-flat capability and other significant improvements over today’s conventional or run-flat tires, the PAX System has been called the "next industry standard" in tire/wheel design.
